The official language of Egypt is Modern Standard Arabic, which is used in written form as well as in formal settings. However, the majority of Egyptians speak a dialect of Arabic known as Egyptian Arabic, which is the colloquial language used in daily conversations. Egyptian Arabic has distinctive features and vocabulary that differ from other dialects of Arabic.
In addition to Arabic, some minority languages are also spoken in Egypt. These include Berber, which is spoken by some communities in the Western Desert, and Nubian, which is spoken by the Nubian people along the Nile in Upper Egypt. There are also small communities of speakers of Greek, Armenian, Italian, and various African languages. English and French are commonly taught in schools and used in business and tourism, but they are not widely spoken as first languages.
